Human Trafficking

In Focus: Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is known as the center of human trafficking. Most of the countries there serve as both procurement countries and destination countries. According to the UNODC, most of the victims in Asia are trafficked supraregionally or within the home country – in almost 99% of cases, people from the region are involved. However, trafficked people originating in this area are also found outside Southeast Asia.

There have been two significant developments in recent years: Between 2007 and 2010, 44% of trafficking victims were transported for the purpose of sexual exploitation – and this is on the rise. The second development is that the percentage of trafficking victims who are children is increasing. In Southeast Asia, children constitute 15% to 20% of the identified victims of regional human trafficking. The main trafficking areas of minors are the Mekong Delta and the Philippines.
